The Customer

A stamping line running a heavy-duty 200 ton press

Mitsuba runs a 200 ton stamping press as part of its production line, feeding and unloading sheet metal blanks for high-volume component manufacturing. Team Torque was engaged to automate the tending of this press.

The Problem

Manual loading and unloading around a 200 ton press posed safety and consistency risks

Operators loading blanks into and unloading stamped parts from a 200 ton press were exposed to a high-risk zone on every cycle, and manual handling introduced variation in placement and cycle time. The customer needed the press tended reliably and safely, without slowing down the line.

Approach Taken

A dedicated press tending robot synchronized with the press cycle

Torque deployed a robot to handle the full loading and unloading sequence for the 200 ton press. The robot picks each blank and places it precisely in the die, then removes the finished part once the press cycle completes, with its motion timed and interlocked to the press to keep the operator well clear of the danger zone on every stroke.

Results Achieved

Safe, consistent press tending with the operator out of the danger zone

The press now runs with fully automated tending, removing operators from the point of operation and giving Mitsuba repeatable placement and cycle times on every stroke. The line runs safely and consistently with the robot handling every load and unload cycle.
